1961-1971 Dodge Truck Engine Colors, Codes and
Model Availability
 

Below is information I have gathered from other truck owners and in no way is the exact way or should be taken as the exact way Chrysler made determinations or designated engine colors for Dodge Trucks from 1961-1971, only that it is information that I have gathered to help in identifying engine applications. Below I have the exact printing from the Dodge Truck Parts Catalogs from 1961-1971, it should be noted that from 1969-1971 there are no notes for engines, so I have listed the notes which only apply to 1961-1968 engines. The actual stamping that is listed below makes reference to 1961 with the letter “R”, which is used as an example only, this stamping will change depending on the year as listed below. From 1965-1971 this will appear different, the stamping will have the letter designating the year along with the “full” cu.in. (A383, B413, etc.).

Engine Notes for 1961-1968:

Six cyl. 170 cu.in. engine (stamped R-17) is available as extra equipment for D100, P200 and standard for the A100 models.

Six cyl. 225 cu.in. engine (stamped R-22) is used for the following D100, D200, D300, W100, W200, P200 and P300 models.

Six cyl. 251 cu.in. engine (stamped R-25) is standard for the following W300, W300M, D400, D500 and P400 models, up to approximately 9-1-62.

Six cyl. 251 cu.in. engine (stamped R-25) is a PREMIUM standard engine for the W500 and as extra equipment for the D500 and S500 models, up to approximately 9-1-62.

Eight cyl. 273 cu.in. engine is used for A100 from approximately 1965.

Eight cyl. 318 cu.in. engine with Mechanical Lifters is standard for D100, D200, D300, W100 and W200 models.

Eight cyl. 318 cu.in. engine with Hydraulic Lifters is standard for W300, D400, D500, D600, C500, W500, S500 and S600 models up to approximately 9-17-63.

Eight cyl. 318 cu.in. Premium engine with Hydraulic Lifters is standard for W300, D400, D500, D600, C500, W500, S500 and S600 models after approximately 9-17-63. This Premium 318 engine was a 202 H.P. rated.

Eight cyl. 318LA cu.in. engine (stamped C-318) was released for 1967 and available for A100, D100, D200, D300, W100 and W200 models. It was then released for the 1968 W300 models stamped (PM31821800000). There also was a 318LA-3 Premium released in 1968 for the D400, D500, D600, W500, C500, L600 models stamped (PM31821800000-3).

Eight cyl. 361 cu.in. engine (stamped R-36) is standard for C600, D700, CT700, C800, CT800 and extra equipment for D500, C500, S500, D600 and S600 models.

Eight cyl. 413 cu.in. engine (stamped R-41) with 2-barrel carb. Is standard for C900, CT900 and extra equipment for CT800 models.

Eight cyl. 413 cu.in. engine (stamped R-41) with 4-barrel carb. Is standard for C1000 and extra equipment for C900 and CT900 models.

Letter Stampings Designating Year of Manufacture (R-17):

R: 1961
S: 1962
T: 1963
V: 1964
A: 1965
B: 1966
C: 1967
PM, PT or DW: 1968
E: 1969
F: 1970
G: 1971

It should be noted also that there are documented trucks that came with specially equipped engines. It is my understanding that these specially equipped trucks were of limited production and were equipped with HP passenger car engines and options.

None of these engines or options are listed in the Dodge Truck Parts Catalogs. Some of which are known to be the 426 Max-Wedge, Hemi, 440, etc.

Stamping that go with the year and cu.in. found on engines and will be located after or below the year and cu.in:

LC-Low Compression.

Maltese Cross-.001 undersized crankshaft.

Maltese Cross & X-.010 undersized crankshaft.

A-.020 oversized cyl. Bore.

X-oversized valve guides.

HP-High Performance.

A-Cast Iron Crankshaft.

Diamond-oversized tappets.

Engine Stamping Location:

All these stampings will be on a flat machined surface located on the block.

Slant 6’s: Right side of block below #1 spark plug.

273, 318 & 360: Left front of block below cylinder head.

361 & 383: Right front side of block below distributor.

413 & 440: Left front side of block at valley pan rail.
